About The Author
Yvonne Tasker
Yvonne Tasker is a retired social worker, BA Social Work (Hons) it is a Bachelor of Arts, having worked for most of her adult life in the social work industry. She has worked in a vast array of settings, including work with murderers, sex offenders, people with substance abuse issues, domestic violence victims, and children in the care system. She always remembered her grassroots and worked from a framework of dignity and respect, believing that everyone has their own “unique story” that has potentially impacted their need for assistance.
Yvonne raised four children from a young age, mostly as a single parent. When her first-born child, Michael, received the tragic diagnosis of Ewing’s sarcoma (malignant bone cancer) at the age of four, and later underwent a heart transplant at the age of nineteen, she pulled out all the stops to save her child and left no stone unturned. This theme continues throughout her journey. She writes with raw honesty, opening herself up and sharing the lengths and depths she was prepared to go to in an attempt to save her child’s life.
She is honest and introspective about the challenges and family dynamics surrounding her journey with Michael and her other three children, as well as her extended family, throughout this fifteen-year period and the ramifications following Michael’s death.
Yvonne hopes her book will put osteosarcoma on the map, as it is one of the most common cancers in young children, yet it receives less funding than many other cancers. The survival rates for osteosarcoma are still grim, and the treatment is brutal. She believes greater community awareness, increased funding, and more clinical trials are essential.
